Canadian TikToker Gen Darling, who lives in the Maldives and is married to a Maldivian man, has become a familiar face on Maldivian social media. But her recent experiences have stirred both support and backlash online.
In one TikTok, Gen shared how she failed her driving test on a Maldivian island after being overwhelmed by fans who were watching and taking photos during the test. She explained that the pressure made her nervous, ultimately causing her to fail.
In a separate video, she mentioned that during her visit to Addu, she felt unsafe after being told people were tracking her location through her car. To avoid attention, she said she changed vehicles three times. However, Gen later clarified that she never said people were physically chasing her or following her in real time—only that being told her car was being tracked made her feel scared.
Following the backlash, Gen issued a series of Instagram stories to clarify her comments and apologize to the Addu community. She expressed her deep appreciation for the Maldives and Maldivians, sharing how she’s spent years adapting to the culture and learning Dhivehi. She also stated that while being a public figure comes with challenges, the recent hate and threats toward her and her family were distressing.
She emphasized that the goal of her original video was simply to raise awareness about respecting privacy and appropriate timing when approaching influencers in public.
So the question remains — what do you think? Did the situation go too far, or was it just a misunderstanding?
If she wants privacy, she should stop calling herself a celebrity influencer and live a private life. She wanted more attention and more people to follow her on TikTok. She got what she wanted. Why the drama?
