The popular local dance group Hiyala has announced plans to take legal action against Television Maldives (TVM), which operates under Public Service Media (PSM). The group says TVM aired their latest Eid song, “Boamathivanee,” without asking for or receiving permission.

What Happened?

Hiyala recently released the song “Boamathivanee” on YouTube as a special Eid project. The song celebrates memories of life in the islands during the 90s and quickly became popular online, reaching tens of thousands of views.

But soon after, TVM aired the full video during one of their Eid programs. According to Hiyala, this was done without their knowledge or approval. TVM even presented the video as if it was a special Eid gift from their channel.

In a public statement, Hiyala expressed disappointment and concern, calling TVM’s actions unprofessional and a violation of their rights. They also confirmed that no request was made by TVM to use the song, and they never agreed to share it with the channel.

What Happens Next?

Hiyala said they are currently exploring legal options and may file a case unless the issue is resolved properly. So far, PSM or TVM have not responded publicly to the claims.

This situation has started a wider discussion online about respecting artists’ rights and how even public media should follow proper procedures when using content made by others.

Why This Matters

This isn’t just about one song. It’s about:

  • Respecting local creators and their hard work
  • Making sure public institutions follow the same rules as everyone else
  • Protecting the future of Maldivian art and culture

Samuga Media will continue to follow this story and bring updates as it develops.
