Dhaka, July 21, 2025 — A Bangladesh Air Force fighter jet crashed into the campus of Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka, on Monday afternoon, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 160, in one of the deadliest aviation tragedies in the country’s recent history.

The aircraft, identified as an F-7 BGI—a Chinese-made training and light combat jet—went down shortly after takeoff from BAF Base Bir Uttam A. K. Khandker at approximately 1:06 PM local time. It struck the school building while classes were in session, causing widespread devastation.

Among the deceased is the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Toukir Islam, who initially survived the crash but later died from his injuries in hospital. At least one student was also confirmed dead, and most of the casualties were young children attending classes from nursery to third grade. The timing of the crash, just minutes before school break, contributed to the high number of injuries.

Hospitals across the city reported over 160 injured, with at least 60 individuals in critical condition. Emergency services—including firefighters, ambulances, and military rescue teams—responded swiftly to the scene, evacuating survivors and securing the area.

According to an official statement from the Bangladesh government’s communication office, the crash was caused by a technical or mechanical failure. Preliminary findings suggest the pilot experienced a malfunction shortly after takeoff. Though instructed to eject, Flight Lieutenant Islam was unable to do so due to low altitude and attempted to divert the jet from densely populated areas—ultimately crashing into the school.

The Bangladesh Air Force has launched a high-level investigation into the crash. Officials have vowed a full review of operational procedures and extended support to the victims and their families. “This is a national tragedy. We will leave no stone unturned in finding answers and helping those affected,” said a government spokesperson.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed profound sorrow over the incident and announced a day of national mourning on July 22. Flags across the country will be flown at half-mast.

International condolences have also poured in, including from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who offered heartfelt sympathies and extended support to Bangladesh during this time of grief.

The F-7 BGI, part of Bangladesh’s aging air fleet, is an upgraded version of the Chengdu J-7, itself derived from the Soviet-era MiG-21. Monday’s crash has raised serious concerns over the safety and maintenance of the country’s military aircraft.

As investigations continue, the nation mourns the innocent lives lost in a tragedy that has shaken families and reignited debates over air safety near densely populated areas.
