Malé, Maldives — A viral post from commentary account Hassan Kurusee has sparked public outrage after claiming one of STELCO’s engines — funded by taxpayer money — has been severely neglected due to alleged corruption within the company’s management.

According to the post, STELCO’s top officials reportedly demanded commissions from European suppliers responsible for engine maintenance. When the suppliers refused, proper servicing was never carried out — leaving the engines to deteriorate.

“The result?”

  • Frequent power outages
  • Soaring electricity bills
  • And the public now being urged to set their air conditioners to 25°C as a conservation measure

Kurusee shared video footage of the damaged engine, calling it a symbol of mismanagement and misplaced priorities. The commentary has reignited discussions about transparency in state-run utilities and how corruption can directly impact everyday citizens.

As Maldivians continue to struggle with high utility costs, many are questioning how much longer such issues will be tolerated — and whether any accountability will follow.

Do you think STELCO should respond to these allegations?
