In a move that has drawn national attention, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik as the Special Envoy of the President.
The appointment ceremony took place on May 26, 2025, at the President’s Office in Malé. Photos from the event show both leaders sharing a formal moment as the letter of appointment was officially handed over.
Dr. Waheed, who previously served as Vice President from 2008 to 2012 and as President from 2012 to 2013, is no stranger to high office. His career also includes experience in Parliament, executive roles in the Ministry of Education, and over a decade of international work with UNICEF.
According to the President’s Office, Dr. Waheed will now serve as a key diplomatic figure — representing the President on strategic missions abroad, strengthening international ties, and unlocking new opportunities for the Maldivian economy.
President Muizzu expressed confidence in Dr. Waheed’s ability to deliver on this mandate, citing his “extensive political experience and diplomatic background.”
Dr. Waheed, for his part, thanked the President for the trust placed in him. He stated that he is “honored to once again serve the country” and pledged to fulfill the responsibilities with full dedication.
While the appointment has sparked a variety of reactions among citizens, many are watching closely to see how this former head of state will shape the Maldives’ future on the global stage.
